Grade point scale
This is the standard 4.0 scale used by most US high schools and colleges.
| Letter grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A+ or A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
How to calculate your GPA by hand
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ creditsSay you took four classes this semester:
| Class | Grade | Credits | Grade points |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | A (4.0) | 3 | 12.0 |
| Calculus | B+ (3.3) | 4 | 13.2 |
| Chemistry | B (3.0) | 4 | 12.0 |
| History | A- (3.7) | 3 | 11.1 |
| Total | 14 | 48.3 |
48.3 ÷ 14 = a 3.45 GPA. Classes worth more credits pull the average harder. That's why a B in a 4-credit class hurts more than a B in a 1-credit class.
Weighted GPA
Many high schools reward harder classes by adding points: a common system adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment. An A in AP Biology then counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. Schools vary, and colleges often recalculate your GPA their own way, so report both numbers if an application asks.
Raising your cumulative GPA
The more credits you have, the more slowly your cumulative GPA moves. With a 3.0 over 60 credits, a perfect 4.0 semester of 15 credits only lifts you to (3.0 × 60 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 75 = 3.2. Improving early in school has the biggest effect.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each class's points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment, so a weighted GPA can go above 4.0.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?
At most colleges and many high schools an A+ counts as 4.0, the same as an A. Some schools give 4.3 for an A+. This calculator uses 4.0; check your school's handbook.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your current cumulative GPA by the credits you have already completed to get your total grade points, add this term's grade points, then divide by your total credits. Enter both values in the Cumulative GPA section and the calculator does it for you.
Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?
Usually not. A pass in a pass/fail class earns credit but no grade points, so leave it out. A failing grade in a graded class does count, as 0.0 points.
